Exploring Microbiology for Kids

Uncover the world of microorganisms! You’ll search for tardigrades, amoebas, ciliates, euglenoids, flatworms, rotifers, copepods, nymphs and more. You’ll use microscopes to learn about microscopic single-celled and multicellular organisms. Anticipate a possible visit to a UW lab to learn about current research involving microorganisms and cells. 

What You'll Learn

  • The roles of cells in living organisms.
  • The different types and components of cells
  • How to use a microscope to identify organisms and cell components
  • How to put together various types of slides for observation under a microscope
  • How to collect field samples for analysis

Who Should Register 

This course is for incoming fourth and fifth graders.

More Information

This in-person course is taught on the UW Seattle campus.

Students who want a full-day experience can register for two courses — one in the morning and one in the afternoon — which will include a supervised lunch break between courses. Students should bring a lunch.
