Photography Exploration

Do you love taking pictures? Ever wish your photographs were better? Then this workshop is for you! We’ll take photographs every day at locations all around the UW campus, from out on the stadium field to inside the life sciences greenhouses, from inside the power plant to the top of the UW Tower. We’ll experiment with photo styling and spend time sharing photographs for feedback. We’ll meet guest speakers like a National Geographic Canadian biologist, a portrait photographer and Photoshop guru, and the Seahawks photographer. We’ll close with a finale, presenting our results to family and guests. Come ready to photograph, experiment, explore and have fun!  Bring any camera and see where photography can take you.

What You'll Learn

  • How your camera works
  • Camera settings to let you be creative
  • Principles of composition and how to apply them
  • How to take better portraits, including selfies
  • How to explore and really "see" using your camera

Who Should Register

This course is for incoming fourth and fifth graders.

Instructor

More Information

This in-person course is taught on the UW Seattle campus. To participate you’ll need a digital camera and its instruction manual. Your camera can be a point-and-shoot, DSLR or mirrorless. You'll also need to set up a free Flickr account; this is where we’ll share our results.

Students who want a full-day experience can register for two courses — one in the morning and one in the afternoon — which will include a supervised lunch break between courses. Students should bring a lunch.

See the Policies page for details about registration policies, refunds, waitlists and more.
